It indicates that the disdain shown by magicians (i.e. Houdini was a lousy magician) was never held by the non-magician public. Even when audiences couldn't have seen what they said they saw (in personal correspondence and conversations) it's a good example of a magician leaving the audiences with false memories of the impossible.
