I see Shavelson toned down the script a bit as they were more free with the language in the book. Also I felt the Houdini character had the rough edges smoothed a bit for the movie. Was that Glaser though or Shavelson I wonder? In the book, Houdini comes across as a guy who is a little too fond of melbonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4732721553418878547.post-82255935823398508362010-12-18T18:04:04.264-08:002010-12-18T18:04:04.264-08:00Thanks! Daisy White, Bessie's drinking, possible conflict with Mama...it's all there. He had a real vision of what he thought Houdini's personal life looked like, and that vision is The Great Houdinis. Don't know why this John Coxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04391313393222271260noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4732721553418878547.post-33144346173508577162010-12-17T08:16:14.246-08:002010-12-17T08:16:14.246-08:00Like I said, there's so much personal insider ...Like I said, there's so much personal insider info in this movie that just wasn't available (in books) when this was made. I regret never interviewing Shavelson. I agree that it does seem in retrospect to have a bit more truth to it than was apparent at the time. As an added bonus, it has the lovely Ruth Gordon who does "crazy old lady" like nobody else. I've always enjoyed her work.

The seance thing has melbonoreply@blogger.com
