Harry and Mama revealed

Here's our first real look at Adrien Brody as Houdini in HISTORY's upcoming Houdini miniseries. Here he's posing with Hungarian actress Eszter Ónodi who plays his mother, Cecelia Weiss, in the new film. This behind-the-scenes shot was posted to Ónodi's Facebook page.

My guess is this is from the ball in Budapest when Houdini reunites his mother with relatives while she is dressed in a gown made for Queen Victoria (this scene was also memorably dramatized in 1976's The Great Houdinis). Seems fitting that our first good look at Harry would be with Mama by his side.

Houdini stars Adrien Brody as Houdini and Kristen Connolly as Bess. The 4-hour miniseries is directed by Uli Edel from a script by Nicholas Meyer. Houdini is an A&E Studios Lionsgate co-production. It will air over the course of two nights on HISTORY in 2014.

  1. Is it just me or does Harry look older than Mama here?

    1. Eszter Ónodi is only 40. She is in aged makeup, but you can't really see it in this pic. They probably cast a younger actress for Mama so the childhood scenes work. Easier to add years than take them away.

  2. I'm not feeling Brody as Houdini.

  3. I'm with you, Anonymous. I'm pleased with the actress playing Cecilia, but Brody... just looks nothing at all like him. Too skinny, too. :(

Maybe it will be better and more believable when seeing the miniseries.

  4. He is very skinny. Too bad he didn't bulk up a bit for the role.

    Looks may be deserving.

  6. Thing is, Johnathon Schaech in Houdini (98) was a good physical match for Houdini, but not the best actor, and I think that biopic suffered because of that. He was hard to connect with. Brody is a complete physical mismatch, but he's certainly an excellent actor, so that might make all the difference in the world. He may suck us in and win us over very quickly.
