This will be the last post of the month. I'm going to give myself a summer break to recharge my batteries, chamber some posts, and work on my projects. I will still be active on Patreon. Otherwise, see you in September!
Highly likely this photo was taken the weekend of June 17-18, 1922. The Houdini's met up with the Doyles in Atlantic City that weekend. The infamous Lady Doyle seance took place Sunday the 18th. Houdini's straw hat, black tie, and ice cream suit matches the outfit he wore when photographed with Doyle outside the Ambassador Hotel.
I forgot about ice cream suits but yes that is what he has on...which looking at how he wore old style clothes seems quite fashionable. Wonder if he bought it in Atlantic City/
Houdini was not an off the rack clothes guy. At 5'5 he was too short and had to have his dress pants cut and hemmed. Clothing manufacturers don't make men's dress pants in 29 length, or less. Most men are 5'7 or taller. If he bought that suit in Atlantic City on that trip, a tailor must have quickly cut and hemmed the pants.
At 5'4 I can't find dress pants in 29 length. They have to be cut and hemmed by a tailor or somebody with a sewing machine. With denim jeans I can buy off the rack at 30 and give it a half fold at the bottom like John Lennon used to do.
I relate to him so much not being able to find stuff in my size. I’m a small lady 5’1 and I’m an extra small. Either something his too long in regards to pants. - Abby Martin
His right hand wrapped around Bess’s shoulder shows his very long fingers in relation to the palm of his hand and is noticeable in other photos . Has any magician amateur or professional speculated on the ease or difficulty of close up manipulation with such long fingers to conceal cards, coins, keys? Thanks again, John for the post and enjoy your time this month.. Dave Edwards.
The length of the fingers doesn't affect the ability to do sleight of hand. Max Malini had very small hands but he was able to palm and do the Pass expertly. Larger hands have a slight advantage. Bigger mitts help with concealment and certain moves.
Most beautiful photo of Harry and Bess on their holidays ❤️

DeleteThis may be a weird question but how big were Houdini’s hands? - Abby Martin
