LINK: Needling Houdini by Ben Winn

Our friend Ben Winn has written a superb article for the June issue of Genii Magazine about Houdini's clash with the Rigoletto brothers over the Needles trick. It's very well written and researched, as we've come to expect from Ben!

  2. David Bamberg, Okito's son, mentioned in his autobiography Illuision Show that his father had sent him to 278 on an errand when he was a teenager. He rode to the brownstone on public transportation and upon arrival he sees HH in the house shirtless. This was during the summer. HH offered him some chewing gum and momentarily went upstairs. David took the opportunity to snoop around the drawers near him and saw a packet of the Needles in one of the drawers.

  3. AI does not always give you the correct answers. Dwellings in NYC also get very cold in the winter. Architects in the north didn't build homes in the 1890's to heat the ceilings. This was the style as are the mansions in Newport, RI. Status, large furniture, paintings and wealth play more of a part mate. Paul

  4. Yeah, cold was definitely a bigger issue in 278 than heat. HH spent a fortune heating the house (as I'm sure the current homeowners do). I'm sure it was sweltering in the summer. But you just take off your shirt. Done. HH was probably happy that he didn't have to buy coal during the summer.
