I'm preparing to send
Handcuff King: The Conquests of Harry Houdini 1900–1909 to the printer on Monday, and I just realized I don't have the exact date for when Hardeen married Elsie Fozzard. It's said to have been sometime in 1904, and it may have been in England. I have the marriage dates of his other brothers. I have the date of Franz Kukol's marriage ("to an old girl his age"). But somehow I don't have Hardeen.
I currently don't have a subscription to
Ancestry, so if someone wants to be a hero and try to suss it out for me there (or anywhere), I'll give you thanks in the book! You can leave it in the comments or

DeleteThis photograph is surreal. Hardeen looks 1940s modern in his suit and tie. Those turn of the century photos we're familiar with seem like a dream. Is that framed photo George's dad on the fireplace mantle?
ReplyDeleteDiego Domingo has dug into Ancestry for me and found some good Elsie documents, but nothing that gives us a firm date. This one is a stumper for folks. But I'm making my peace with just saying they were married in 1904. That's what Rauscher says in his Hardeen book. That's what Jon Oliver once told me Harry Houdini Hardeen told him. That's how the math adds up on some of the Ancestry docs. This, like the exact date of the Budapest trip (remember THIS POST), might have to remain vague. But I appreciate everyone's help!

DeleteMy Ancestry.com account is for the U.S. only. If someone could access a World Ancestry.com account, (personal or at a library/college) and also newspapers.com account, more information could come to light, especially if they were married outside of the U.S.

I'm feeling petty certain they were married in England. I have newspapers.com and have done a pretty good search of 1904 English newspapers for any announcement.
DeleteAlso researching THE BILLBOARD or THE YANKEE CLIPPER, might have something, as THE BILLBOARD regularly noted marriages/divorces/births/deaths, etc.

Interesting that her burial information/location/marker is shown on finda grave.com, but does not give her married name or mention that she was married to Hardeen/Theodore Weiss.

DeleteChecking again, she is not. She is buried in Daytona Beach, Florida. B. 1871 - D. 1967. Buried as Elsie H. Hardeen with photo of marker on findagrave.com. Thanks for questioning this, prevents mis-information getting further!
