FOX NATION SET TO PREMIERE “HOUDINI: BACK FROM THE DEAD,” MARKING PLATFORM’S FIRST FULL-LENGTH PROJECT CREATED ENTIRELY WITH AI-GENERATED IMAGERYThree-Part Series Premieres Ahead of Halloween and 100th Anniversary of Harry Houdini’s Death
NEW YORK – October 8, 2026 – FOX Nation will premiere the new three-part series Houdini: Back from the Dead on Wednesday, October 14, announced Lauren Petterson, president of the platform. Marking FOX Nation’s first full-length, multi-episode production to rely entirely on AI-generated imagery, the series uses groundbreaking technology to bring the extraordinary life, daring feats and enduring legacy of Harry Houdini back to life, allowing the legendary magician to sit down and tell his own story. A trailer can be found here.
In commenting on the series, Petterson said, “FOX Nation is breaking new creative ground by using emerging technology to bring one of history’s most fascinating figures to life for a modern audience. We’re proud to showcase a new form of historical storytelling that allows viewers to experience Houdini’s remarkable life in his own words, while re maining rooted in extensive research and historical accuracy.”
Premiering ahead of the 100th anniversary of Houdini’s death on October 31, 1926, the series imagines the legendary magician performing one final impossible feat: returning from the dead to narrate his own story. Viewers will see Houdini step onto the set of a modern documentary interview, answering questions about his life, career, relationships, and greatest acts. His wife Bess, his mother, brother, friends, reporters, and business associates are also brought to life, speaking through words pulled from diaries, books, correspondence, and historical writings.
To achieve the series’ visual authenticity, the production licensed archival footage and more than 400 historic photographs, which served as source imagery for a team of AI artists. Actors portrayed the principal characters to capture authentic movement, cadence, and performance, while AI technology transformed their appearances to resemble their historical counterparts. The series’ scripts were written entirely by humans, with all historical claims supported by archival research and expert review.
Across three episodes, Houdini: Back from the Dead explores little-known chapters of the magician’s life, including a childhood accident in which he was shot in the hand; his relationship with his mother; a staged rivalry with his brother; his brief ambition to abandon the stage after becoming a pioneering aviator; his fascination with death and near-fatal attempt to escape from a grave; his complicated marriage to Bess; his relationship with author Charmian London; and his crusade against fraudulent spiritualist mediums that resulted in threats against his life.
Houdini: Back from the Dead is produced for FOX Nation by Red Rock Films. Red Rock Films specializes in responsible AI production and works with partners across the production process, including emerging creative technologies, workflow development, rights and clearances.

This looks absolutely brilliant, I hope it shown here in the UK on mainstream television
ReplyDeleteI don't think this will broadcast on mainstream television. It's a cable TV broadcast. You'll have to be subscribed to some type of service. The buried alive sequence looks silly. I doubt HH attempted it face up when he experimented with it. Dirt shoveled onto his face? C'mon man!
DeleteBoycott! Boycott! Boycott! AI sucks butt! This is disgraceful and disgusting! Pretty sure there are young, very talented actors out there, actually Jewish, out there to play Houdini. Boycott! Boycott! Is this really how we will celebrate his legacy? Are you freaking kidding me?? 😢 I will not stand for this! - Abby Martin
ReplyDeleteJohn, I expect more from you. 😭 what the actual F - Abby Martin
ReplyDeleteI dislike generative AI and am not a fan of the extent to which this project employs it…... But. to be clear John was just consulting on this. He was not in charge. This would have been made with or without him. And at least with John consulting on history there will be some amount of grounding in the information conveyed.

Thank you, Colleen. Yep, my job was the history, and I have say, Red Rock Films cared more about the history than anyone I've ever worked with by far. Also, all the dialogue spoken by all the AI characters are actual words they spoke. Ultimately, they might have had to insert some written dialogue, but they really knocked themselves out to find and use only real quotations. I really loved that idea. From the start, I was impressed by the ambition of this and their dedication to bringing Houdini to life in a way that has never been done before. Also, a year ago when this started, there was far less hostility toward AI. It was exciting to see what could done with a proper budget.
DeleteI have to say I definitely tip my hat to that dialog dedication. That is a very neat and unique intention and impressive that they were able to carry it to the finish line. Nice to be able to find hidden gems and be able to appreciate unique aspects/approaches even within the unpleasant/uncomfortable medium, —Colleen
DeleteWhile on the subject of history, I had assumed my book would be out before this aired, so I freely shared some of its new info and scoops. The most notable is how they tell the story of the Belle Isle Bridge jump. This is going to seem like they are spinning a new fiction, but it is all fact and how it really went down, right down to him wearing his clothes.
DeleteHa! Fascinating. I can’t wait to read the story in your book.

I’m still angry. *sobbing* - Abby Martin
DeleteBut my anger is not gonna make this disappear. This is still scary for me. It’s hopeless! (Faints) - Abby Martin… you can just call me Abby. There are no other Abbys here right?
DeleteI’m tired of typing my whole name 😂 - Abby
DeleteAt least your chronology is coming out soon. ☺️💕 That makes me less sad and scared. - Abby
DeleteThank you. I'm not afraid of AI. I am afraid of the people developing it. I'm also not looking forward to the onslaught of AI slop we will have to endure in the coming years. But in time, I think people will learn to recognize when something is made by AI and accept or reject it on its own merits. It should all be labeled, IMO. It's even possible real art by real artists will become more valuable and desirable.
DeleteJohn, you are exactly right. ☺️✨ - Abby
DeleteI looked at the trailor and I can almost tell who the actor was who played Houdini. This is indeed an ambitious project and if we can love Avatar, I see no reason not to love this production and all the effort ( which is extraordinary if you understand how to do this type of AI work for motion) that went into its production. We cant stop progress...and this is certainly movement in that direction. John should be applauded for guiding the history and statements for authenticity. I am looking forward to this production. Let's not burn something you haven't seen or read. Salem is still alive it seems in Houdiniland.
ReplyDeleteAvatar is not AI it is CGI.
DeleteI'm wondering if there's even a distinction anymore. I guarantee you there is such a thing as AI-assisted CGI. I think about this in terms of Grammarly. I've used Grammarly for years as a spell and grammar checker. AI is now part of its matrix. So, technically, am I using AI in my writing? Seems like everything is being merged, whether we want it or not.
DeleteI hear you on the grey areas. I think there is a distinction between AI assisted tools and generative AI. For instance when you use grammerly I imagine it is prompting you to correct your mistakes, but it is still your words/writing…..which is very different from providing a prompt of subject and tone and having the machine generate something entirely based on the stolen writing if others. To me those are two very different things.

Yes--AI has taken over spell check duties but it won't write for you unless you want it to. High school and college students are doing that.
DeleteYes, I do think "generative" is the key word. There are people who say they use AI to create their first draft, but then THEY go in and shape it into what they want. Fine. But you are not the writer. You are the editor. And if you don't understand the difference, then you are definitely not a writer! Haha.
DeleteYes, very much that, John. It is astounding that people would consider editing the stollen rehashed writing of others to be the act of writing itself. As a writer, I could not imagine not using my own ideas and words for every step of the process.
