Something's missing

Let's cap our Weird Week with this weird one. Here is the famous photo of Houdini and Dorothy Young performing Radio of 1950 as it appeared in the Wichita Daily Times on December 5, 1926. When I first saw this I thought I had found a new image. There was something different about it. But I now realize it is the same image, just with something missing. Can you tell what that something is?

If you don't know, CLICK HERE to compare this to the familiar image.

So which photo should we believe? Was this image too sexy for Witchita and altered? Or was the more familiar photo altered to be made more sexy and what we have here is the original?

If you can tell me for sure, you'll win a Major Award.

  1. Harry's pose looks a bit different in the familiar photo than the one in the Wichita Daily. The cane in his right hand is angled differently. Both photos appear to have been taken a few seconds apart. It would also explain Dorothy's disappearing leg trick. She lowered it back down as the photographer kept clicking. Or lifted it up?

    1. You think it's different? I looked long and hard and could find no differences. Even the reflections on the radio are all exactly the same.

  2. In the familiar image, Dorothy appears to be cracking a wide smile. Her cheeks look wide. In the Wichita Daily photo, her face appears a bit longer with less of a smile. And Harry is almost in front of the radio. In the familiar image he's a foot away. If it's the same photo, then the newspaper folks tampered with it. They cut out Harry like a paper doll and put him closer to the radio. And they blacked out Dorothy's leg.

    1. Oh, you're right! Harry is in a very different position in relation to the radio. How did I not see that? But I do suspect he's a cut out.

    2. Indeed--they cut out his profile and slid it closer to the radio. And airbrushed Dorothy's leg. It's a nice leg, curvy and titillating. A bit too risque for a newspaper in the Midwest. Harry knew what he was doing when he picked Dorothy for his 3 in 1.
