In Houdini Speaks to the Living, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Harry Houdini debate the true nature of magic, science and faith through a historically based, largely verbatim play from writer-director Beth Burns and writer-magician Patrick Terry, who also plays Houdini. Below is a photo of Patrick doing some research!
You can check out a tailer for the play on YouTube.

I hope this play eventually finds its way to Wisconsin, his American 'home state!' I'd be in attendance!
ReplyDeleteI saw the play tonight at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and was really impressed! The way in which Beth Burns and Patrick Terry (co-authors) have shaped verbatim comments by Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (from a variety of sources) is quite ingenious and has resulted in a very well-constructed and interesting play. Burns also directed and Terry portrays Houdini (alongside Robert Matney as Conan Doyle); they’re very entertaining and engaging, magic is skillfully integrated into the dialogue, and the tension striking at the heart of the friendship between the two icons is quite absorbing. Annemarie van Roessel also led a fascinating discussion with the performers and director after the show and her questions were excellent. I’m so pleased to hear they’re going to be touring the show.
ReplyDeleteFantastic! Thanks for the report, Tom.
