Houdini spooks Portland in 1924

Orhistory.org has a great article about Houdini's visit to Portland in 1924 with his spiritualism exposé lecture. Houdini's lecture tour is is not very well covered in most biographies, so it's nice to get a taste of it here. Interestingly, Houdini included 20 minutes of magic as part of the evening.

But Houdini's talk at the Public Auditorium happened to be on the same night as the Presidential election of 1924 (Calvin Coolidge vs. John W. Davis) and that presented a problem, as the article explains:

So how was the production?
Well.. it wasn’t very well attended. Maybe it was due to Election Night (the promoters promised that the returns would be read at Houdini’s performance, but thousands of Portlanders and their families took to the streets to read or hear the results instead). A few hundred folks came to the Public Auditorium to see the magician’s show, which the reporter still considered “a goodly crowd.” But maybe Portland people have always been into the woo-woo shit, and didn’t want to pay good money to hear Houdini diss their beliefs. None the less, it would seem that those that did manage to attend had a good time. “The audience was frankly delighted and was friendly to Houdini, bursting into frequent and prolonged applause.”

Did Houdini really perform in San Francisco in 1926?

The Official Houdini Séance 2015 will be held this year at the historic Brava Theater in San Francisco. The seance is open to the public and promises to be a spectacular event. The official website notes that Houdini himself performed at the Brava -- then called the Roosevelt Theater -- in 1926, the year it opened. But Houdini in San Francisco in 1926? Can that be right? As the attending Houdini Historian for this event, I felt like this was something I had a responsibility to investigate. Here's what I found out.

According to organizer Robert Strong, the source of the Brava claim is a plaque on the wall of the theater lobby which states that Houdini performed there in 1926. So I contacted the good folks at the Brava Theater who were very nice and eager to help. They said the plaque was actually put up by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) who held an event at the Brava last year. They are the one's who researched the history and discovered the alleged Houdini connection. One certainly can't blame the Brava for leaving the plaque up and taking pride in this famous association!

So I fired off an email to SFMOMA to discover the source of their information. Unfortunately, the museum is closed for construction and no one was available to answer my email (another possibility; they blew me off). So the trail went cold.

But knowing what we know about Houdini, and especially how much we know about his activities in 1926 (the year he died), how possible is it that he performed in San Francisco that year?

First off, it should be pointed out that San Francisco was a very important city in Houdini's career. It was the first city he played under the management of Martin Beck in 1899, and is where he achieved his first real recognition and success. Houdini returned in 1907, 1915, and 1923. He performed an overboard box escape in San Francisco Bay (ad left) and a suspended straitjacket escape from the Hearst Building at Third and Market above a reported 30,000 spectators. So Houdini and San Francisco are linked in meaningful ways.

Now, as I said, 1926 is a year very well documented in the life of Houdini, and there is no record of him in San Francisco that year. Not even close. Also, the Roosevelt opened as a vaudeville/movie house, and Houdini had moved well beyond vaudeville by 1926 and was touring with his own full evening show ("3 Shows in One"). Houdini's roadshow did not make it beyond Detroit in 1926.

So we have a few possibilities to consider. Houdini made a trip to San Francisco in 1926 that has somehow gone unrecorded (seems unlikely). The Roosevelt showed a Houdini movie and over the years it has been confused with the real man (seems possible). Or could it be that Houdini had pre-booked the Roosevelt as the San Francisco stop for his "Coast to Coast" tour in 1926-27? So Houdini shows up in the old theater archives -- possibly uncovered by the researchers at SFMOMA -- as being scheduled to perform there, and the assumption was that he made it.

I admit this last theory is a speculative stretch, but I do like it. If Houdini was scheduled to perform at the Brava/Roosevelt, then there's something poetic about holding The Official Houdini Séance there. The theater has been waiting for Houdini to arrive for 89 years!

However, my spirit guide offers another explanation from the great beyond:

It's true! On March 24, 1926, Harry jumped into his Voisin biplane and flew out to the West Coast for a quick canoodle with Charmian London. While out getting some Farmers Chop Suey, he stopped in and gave an impromptu performance at the Roosevelt. Then with Nikola Tesla's help, he teleported back to New York before Bess sobered...I mean, woke-up.

So we can believe whatever version we like.

Recent seance publicity has focused more on the fact that Houdini performed in San Francisco 100 years ago this year, which is certainly true. But regardless of the history, the Brava is a beautifully restored theater from Houdini's time and I think it's going to make a terrific venue for The Official Houdini Séance 2015.

Tickets to the Official Houdini Séance 2015 are now available direct from the Brava website. But you also have SIX days left to buys tickets through the Official Houdini Séance Kickstarter where you can choose from a whole host of special premiums. Either way, it's time to make your plans for Halloween, and I hope to see some familiar faces at the Brava.

And, who knows, maybe Houdini's face will appear as well!

With thanks to Anastacia Powers Cuellar of the Brava Theater, Robert Strong, and Theatre Histories for the then and now image at the top of this post.

LINK: Conversation with David Jaher

Dorothy Dietrich and Dick Brookz of the Houdini Museum in Scranton have scored a nice Q&A with David Jaher, author of the new book, The Witch of Lime Street: Séance, Seduction, and Houdini in the Spirit World. Here's a taste:

Q. What was your process for researching The Witch of Lime Street? Was there anything you discovered in the course of your work that you found particularly surprising or intriguing?
A. I had two main sources of research: letters between the various characters and scientists, which involved a thorough search of various archives in the United States and England; and a trove of major newspapers and magazines of the day. What particularly surprised me was how famous Margery, now largely forgotten, was in the 1920s. There are periods, such as the summer of 1924, where she is a front page fixture on the major newspapers in New York and Boston. Another aspect that surprised me was the level of interest at that time in the supernatural. Most people don't associate the Jazz Age with psychics and séances, but it was a time when there was an occult renaissance.

David has also launched an author's Facebook page where you can find links to more interviews and reviews. A full list of his upcoming book signings can be found at the official Witch of Lime Street website.

Houdini and Margery rumble TODAY

David Jaher's eagerly anticipated new book The Witch of Lime Street: Séance, Seduction, and Houdini in the Spirit World is released today. The author is launching the book a at special event at The Corner Bookstore in New York City at 6:00 PM (click for details). Reviews of the book have been universally positive.

It's not often we get a non-fiction work on Houdini this significant. The book is a whopping 436 pages and examines the full story behind Houdini's investigation of Mina Crandon aka "Margery." It also covers Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his own connections to Houdini, Margery and the spiritualist movement.

I'm 100 pages into the book and I'm enjoying it immensely! It's extremely well researched and very well written, and I'm thinking it might end up rivaling Christopher Sandford's Houdini and Conan Doyle as the best examination yet of Houdini's anti-spiritualism activities. I will post a full review later this month.

David Jaher will be making several appearances throughout October and November promoting the book, including giving an illustrated lecture at the Morbid Anatomy Museum in Brooklyn on October 16. You can view a full list of his upcoming appearance at the official Witch of Lime Street website.

The Witch of Lime Street: Séance, Seduction, and Houdini in the Spirit World can be purchased at Amazon.com (U.S.) and Amazon.co.uk (UK). It's also available as an Unabridged Audiobook.

UPDATE: REVIEW: The Witch of Lime Street is no fraud.

The Houdini Box musical in the works

Author Brian Selznick has revealed in an interview with Playbill that he's currently working on a stage musical adaptation of his bestselling 2008 children's book, The Houdini Box. Says the author:

"I've just begun an adaptation of "Houdini Box" for the stage with Dan Moses Schreier. He's a brilliant sound designer and composer, and Jeff Bowen whose going to be writing lyrics for The Houdini Box. We've just begun collaborating. It was a matter of taking a 48-page picture book and figuring out what larger story from this would make sense and demand to be told on-stage, of course with the added curiosity of music and lyrics. What interests me most about the theatre and about musicals is the question, which anyone making a musical asks themselves, "Why are these characters singing? And why are they singing now?" With Houdini Box, we have Houdini himself, who was a creature of the theatre in so many ways, and the idea that the theatre itself becomes part of the way that we create it as a show - that's been very challenging and exciting to think about."

The Houdini Box was adapted as a successful musical play by The Chicago Children's Theatre in 2012. The book was also optioned in 2012 by Chernin Entertainment as a potential movie with filmmaker Kealan O'Rourke (the project appears to have stalled).

The Box Jumper in paperback

The Box Jumper by Lisa Mannetti is now available in a printed edition. This is Houdini fiction, but the plot description on Amazon is a little confusing. A customer review by "Magical" gives a much clearer sense of what this book is all about, so I'm taking the liberty of using it here instead of the official blurb.

A magician posing as merely a curious Houdini enthusiast interviews one of the great illusionist's closest assistants, but as history and horror intertwine, it becomes increasingly clear that no one in this story is exactly who he or she claims to be. Skepticism meets uncertainty, fake psychics cross with dark forces, and one woman's recollections of the past unravel her hold on the present. The story works on many levels, and no matter how you interpret the various accounts, it will leave you guessing to the last page. I highly recommend to fans of dark literary fiction, historical fiction, and anyone who has an interest in Harry Houdini. -Review by Magical, August 21, 2015.

You can purchase The Box Jumper on Amazon.com (U.S.) and Amazon.co.uk (UK).

TCM's airings of The Grim Game will use alternate scores

Surprising news today about this month's television premiere of The Grim Game on TCM. It appears the two showings on October 18th will each feature a different musical score. The following is from the TCM website:

TCM presents an all-night "Silent Sunday" evening of films once thought lost; all are TCM premieres. A gem of the collection is The Grim Game (1919), a murder mystery starring illusionist Harry Houdini, which was restored by Rick Schmidlin. Two showings of The Grim Game feature alternate scores, one by Brane Živkovic and another by Steve Sterner. The Živkovic score was given its world premiere at a screening of the film at the TCM Classic Film Festival in March.

As the blurb states, Brane Živkovic's score played with the film at the Hollywood premiere. It is also the score mastered to the Park Circus DCP which has played various venues over the past six months (a few theaters opted to perform original live scores). While Brane's score is excellent -- it's very much the sound of The Grim Game for me -- I noted in my review that it was somewhat controversial. At times the composer decided to use no music at all, making The Grim Game something silent movies never were -- silent. I suspect that the alternate score by Steve Sterner will be a more traditional continues silent movie score.

Steve Sterner is a well known accompanist to silent films. In 2013, The New York Times profiled him as the Piano Man of the Silent Screen. He's also credited with the score for the restoration of Erich von Stroheim's Foolish Wives (1922).

The Grim Game will air twice on TCM on Sunday, October 18 at 8:00 PM (ET) and at 11:45 PM (ET). The TCM site does specify which time slot will feature which musical score. The Grim Game will be part of a special evening of "Lost and Found" silent films which also includes Sherlock Holmes (1916) starring William Gillette.

A big thanks to Meredith Secaur for uncovering this news.

UPDATE: According to our friends at the Houdini Muesum in Scanton and composer Steve Sterner himself, the first airing at 8:00 PM (ET) will be the Brane Živkovic score and the second airing at 11:45 PM (ET) will be the new score by Steve Sterner. Steve's score is an all original piano score that he recorded in August.

UPDATE 2: According to TCM and Grim Game producer Rick Schmidlin, "The reason the new piano score was created was so The Grim Game could be to presented live for those who do not have a budget for a quartet. Now The Grim Game will have a TCM approved live score when needed for screenings in this format."
