278 wood lath Water Torture Cell by Barry Spector

Our friend Barry Spector has unveiled his latest incredible creation using wood lath he acquired last year from Houdini's New York home (278). As you can see, it's a beautifully faithful scale recreation of Houdini's Water Torture Cell. Barry even used lath to fashion the metal fixtures, such as the hinges, handles, and water plugs. The cell stands approximately 20 inches.

Below is the new USD with some of Barry's other recent lath creations (the Margery control box and bell box). Barry has also created magic wands and a jail cell door which is currently on display at the Houdini Museum of New York.

If you're interested in Barry's work he can be contacted at negrilman15@gmail.com.

Thanks Barry.

  1. Very nice work. Also, cool to hear that the jail cell door is being displayed at the Houdini Museum. Anyone who doesn't have one of the wands, you should get one. It makes a great display!

  2. These are so great. I wonder if a local museum or gallery might be interested in doing a display of Barry's work? Not just his finished pieces, but all the steps in the creation and the whole story of the lath and how they came to be. It's an idea.

    1. That would be a neat idea. Especially with the back story.

  4. Bravo, Barry! Just stunning. One of the things that first struck me when I saw the original WTC at the Houdini Hall of Fame in Niagara Falls was the wood that formed the inside of the cell. It seemed so incongruous for a water-filled interior, and yet so beautiful. Seeing the photo above with wood from the house on the interior of the model is thrilling on a whole new level! Thanks for sharing, Barry and John!

  5. Barry's work is incredible! I love the Margery Box. There was apparently more wood lathe in the batch than I thought.
