The Great Houdinis turns 50

It was 50 years ago that The Great Houdinis aired as the ABC Friday Night Movie on October 8, 1976. Aside from seeing the Tony Curtis movie the year before, this is one of the sharpest memories of my Houdini awakening. This is likely why, despite its extreme fictionalizations, I love this movie and always will.

I thought the best way to mark this anniversary was to link back to all the posts I've done on The Great Houdinis over the lifetime of this blog. And I know what I'll be watching tonight!

Syracuse Herald Journal, Oct. 8, 1976.

  1. This movie still needs a physical media release! Most memorable for me because Peter Cushing plays Conan Doyle! I think he's the only actor to play Sherlock Holmes and his creator?

  2. Correction: There are a handful of other actors who have portrayed Holmes and Doyle.

  3. This film was also a catalyst for me, but the fictions have kept me from repeated viewing. Mama was portrayed as nasty and she wasn't like that in real life. The USD death or emergency? at the end, and the repeat of the Tony Curtis Scotland Yard escape.

  4. Watched it last night and so enjoyed it. It's just so well cast and well written. The kind of tight, adult writing we just don't see anymore. Sally Struther's performance is really sticking with me today. It also seemed really short. Flew by.
