LINK: 57 Park Terrace West: The Houdini Connection

The blog My Inwood by Inwood resident and realtor Cole Thompson has a well-researched article about the death of Houdini's brother Dr. Leopold Weiss. It includes Leo's short New York Times obituary and photos of the apartment building at 57 Park Terrace West from which Leo took his own life on October 6, 1962.

I'm excited to learn that Leo's apartment still stands. I also never realized that Leo killed himself the day after the 70th anniversary of his father's death (Oct. 5, 1892).

Thanks to Perry from NJ for this one.

  2. Great stuff here! October didn't seem to be a good month for the Weiss family. I always imagined the building to be much higher, but then, it's high enough to kill a jumper. Poor Leo, he must have been all alone in this world to have done this. Wasn't his sister Gladys still alive? Hardeen's son could have helped him.

  3. So Leo was the Last of the Mohicans then? He still had outer family and that counts for something. Better than taking your own life.
